Happy Birthday to Me

38 years old today. Great weekend to celebrate it, wandered round the Steampunk exhibition in town, then a nice walk around Oxford, followed by a cracking meal at Shanghai 30s. Scalextric was my main pressie, a fitting addition to a growing collection for a man of my advanced age.

Not really pondered too much the passing of time, tend to do that at New Year. This was more just mellow progression, like a smooth chord change, rather than the bells and whistles the change of year brings. If I’m looking for one thing though, did get thinking about getting out on the bike again, both for traveling to work, and for some trips further afield to take photos out in the countryside. Sounds like a plan.

Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival: 29th March-5th April 2009

This year’s Oxford Literary Festival lasts a little longer than in previous years, and there are some good speakers to look forward to. My personal highlight will be an appearance by Bad Science‘s Ben Goldacre on Sunday 5th April at the McKenna room. Also appearing of note are Ian McEwan, Aravind Adiga and Raymond Blanc, and many others.

Regal to reopen?

A quick follow-up to my previous post What’s going on at the Regal?. The Oxford Times is reporting that it is due to reopen this week, as it has heard from a couple of sources that events have been confirmed as going ahead now.

I’m going to check for myself later in the week to see if this the case, and report back. I hope so, it really would be a shame to lose such a fine venue in Oxford so soon after its launch. These do look like positive signs, although an official comment from the owners on their site or to the Oxford Times would probably be a good idea.

What's going on at The Regal?

According to the article from the Oxford Mail, The Regal hasn’t re-opened after its Christmas break, and has been shut eight more days than planned thus far.

It’s a lovely place, and a lot of money seems to have been spent getting it back into shape, it would be a big shame if it isn’t going to make it.

Double blow for me, as Hospitality Oxford is due to be there on the 21st February, and I was rather hoping to see London Elektricity live.

CCTV on the Cowley Road

And so we are now “protected” on the Cowley Road. I’m not keen personally. I don’t think they protect us that much. However if we’re going to have them, the feed for the cameras should be online for all to see. We should know what can be seen, and we should be able to benefit from them. We could see how busy the road is, see if there is a queue for the O2 Academy, see if our favourite randomly open pub is actually open. I think it’s a matter of open-sourcing our lives, if others get to see them, we should get to share that too.
